Too much!

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Way too busy! On top of my usual boring life, I’ve recently dedicated myself to a unique project called “top secret” by the new acclaim. Look it up in wiki - the company is completely different, but David perry (of Earthworm Jim fame) plans to put it to good use. It’s all about a huge (locked)community developing an innovative mmo for PC. I’m not a mmo expert - heck I’ve only played PSO a few times- but I plan to contribute my ideas and learn a lot as well. Not sure how often I’ll make time to blog, but spring break starts this friday(after school that is) so I’ll definitely be on the computer more for the next week.

*ahem*
Remember this?

April fools?

April fools again?!

and no, this is defiantly not a joke.

I’ve been meaning to post some news on my blog. But news has been slower than slow lately…. which is pretty slow if you ask me. So I sit here at my computer pretty bored… just beat R-type Leo by accident - it was pretty short.[…] Ok, you know what? I’ll just post some random links of news I think are interesting today:

-Interview with Nich Maragos about Etrian Odyssey.

-Gamasutra interview with Ralph Baer.

-Homebrew that allows you to blog with pictochat.(I might use that one of these days)

-Pictures of the black360 with 120GB HD.

-New commercial for English training is hilarious.

And last but not least… WTH is up with Boogie? Apparently Wii gamers aren’t good enough for real games now.

I recently missed a few days of blogging. Though I had good reason for the most part. Thursday I was totally into Rhythm Tengoku(heaven) so I played it up to around 12AM/1AM…
I love that game…
Friday I went to a LAN party right after school and returned at 10:30PM or so. Though with all the heavy lifting(my monitor weighs more than my pc) I felt too tired/lazy to make a post.
It’s strange, I feel very tired right now-…wait… oh no wonder! My PC clock is one hour behind!
AHH!

Lazy wednesday

Wednesday, March 21st, 2007

I feel Lazy today, so instead of the random blabber I present: Random videos! Hey - just like my history class! (sad and true)

The first one is the interview with Suda51 I somewhat indirectly mentioned yesterday. You may have already seen it, but if you haven’t watch it!
(Links only for the DS-X2 version. Wordpress blocks embedded videos/content I guess.)

Also, a new Retronauts Bonus Stage.

I disagree with Chris Kohler about Donkey Kong being the first game visually to tell a story. The story in Donkey was just as subtle as any other old arcade game that attempted a basic story(or even an old 2600/PC game). However, it’s success was probably because it was the first one to do it decently and clearly - I’ll give him that.

Quick/Random news

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

Slow day for gaming news, the biggest thing was the rumor of the Black XB360 with a nice 120GB hard drive. But I really didn’t want to post about any more rumors this week…
Instead, I found some other small-quick bits of news:

-Touch detective 2 website! (wallpapers ftw)
-Bomberman story website. I’m kind of skeptical of the differences between this and “Bomberman land touch!”. They seem too similar, at least there’s a big difference between all the four Harvest moon games for DS(which includes rune factory). sheesh
-Chronos Twin info. This was a GBA title way back when apparently. Some more screens and video showed up on that game, which IMO doesn’t look very good. It’s nice to see a very small-scale developer trying something really bizarre with the DS’s unique hardware - but it looks flawed. I mean, playing two characters on two separate screens?…At the same time? No thanks, not really appealing to me. Looks more frustrating than innovative.

Chronos Twin’s small developer and platform conversion from GBA to DS reminded me of another title called “Western lords” by Blossom soft. (Hey, there’s also an old DS-X2 interview!) Now renamed “Sagrada Guardians”(?), I have also discovered on the site that the game finally has a solid 2008 release date posted! Well ok, I guess that’s not very “solid”… at least we know they’ve made progress. Blossom soft seems to have also joined up with Alten8 on a cell phone game called “Oracle“. After going to Alten8’s site, I discovered that they had just last week(the 15th) announced they were working on DS games! So now I’m thinking Blossom soft could be involved with… even more DS RPG’s? Who knows, interesting stuff going on the the small-time developer world…. and hey, according to Suda51 - this is exactly what the industry needs more of. I’m all for it, just hope these titles aren’t complete crap….

Arcade games

Monday, March 19th, 2007

Lately I’ve been obsessed with arcade games. It might have something to do with me downloading 13GB of mame roms and my recent purchase of a Logitech cordless rumblepad(…2). Yea, I know, it’s wrong. But Arcades are dead here. REALLY dead. So this is the only way to play these things.

Plus, I get to play and talk about games no one else would! Which I’m thinking about doing on a weekly basis when I have nothing else to talk about on my days of “random blabber”. Before I talk about any arcade games though, I have to mention my controller set-up.

First of all, it’s plug-and-play which is great because I hate using wonky drivers that come with hardware like this. Then I set all the “player 1 controls” in mame to certain keys on the keyboard so I could use a program a friend pointed to me called Joy2key. It takes joypad input and translates it into keyboard input. Very helpful when you want to some other game/emulator that doesn’t support joystick input. A great example/use would be Guxt, that game needs to be played with a joypad. Also, there’s no lag so if you have a joypad don’t be afraid to use it!
Set-up aside…(because I’m already posting this a bit late)

Today’s obscure Arcade game is: Far East of Eden Kabuki Klash
Audience: “eeeh?!”
It’s so obscure, it don’t even have a wikipedia entry!
And it’s too bad too, because it’s a wonderful fighting game developed by hudson and uh… a weird company simply called “red”.

It plays like Fatal Fury meets Samurai Showdown, except better. It’s got all your standard fighting-game stuff going on: Multiple characters, an overworld map, 2D fighting plane, the works. It’s the awesome detail work in the sprite animation, surprisingly decent character in dialog and voice overs, excellent balance, and the fact that it’s made by Hudson. Come on, I know you’re thinking of the countless Mario party and Bomerman sequels. I haven’t played too much of this game to be honest -Well, I beat it already. However, every character plays dramatically different. The whole game seems to have a simple balance between three main elements of; swordplay, magic, and fighting/strength. Each character has a bit of each with some other traits on the side to mix it up yet keeping the game perfectly balanced.
You can just just tell by looking at them. (Note: missing here are the four final characters, you may only play against them - not play as them.)

Aaaaaaand that does it for today. Hope you enjoyed this very quick preview of a very obscure arcade game. If you’re 1337 enough, you’ll track down the rom, bios, and run this in mame. It’s worth it!

Rumor rampage

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

There are two rumors recently floating around teh internets. One of them is about Official Nintendo Magazine’s(or ONM) exclusive story next month. Everyone Thinks it’s Nights because well…. this scan from the magazine cover.

Personally, I’m very skeptical. In fact, just today, scans of Ngamer’s magazine turned up with pretty much the same thing. Lots of stars, space, and claims of something exclusive. Do both magazines have the same “exclusive” story? I think so, but I don’t think it’s Nights. If you think about it, it could very well be something more obvious like Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo was even willing to show some new footage at GDC, so maybe there’s more info on the way? Though Nights on Wii would be pretty awesome…

The other rumor is the question of weather Saturn games are planned for the Wii VC or not. It’s an on-going rumor with no evidence or anything, just pure skepticism and people arguing weather it could even be done or not. Some say despite the huge ISO rip sizes of 200-600mb modern compression could pull through and we would be able to store a few games on the Wii’s 512mb internal mask rom. I say sure, maybe. Because even if Sega were able to pull that off, emulation would be an utter nightmare - Not to mention an emulator that would be able to uncompress data as it emulates. Since most Saturn games are arcade ports -that use much less memory and are easier to emulate- it’s a much better idea if Sega would just start throwing arcade games up for download. Heck, SNK’s doing it! Well… that’s because Neo Geo systems are basically arcade machines.

…THE HUNDRED MEGA SHOCK! …sorry I couldn’t resist.

Shmups

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

19xx, R-type, Ikaruga, the list goes on. I’ve just been playing way too many shmups this week. So I’m going to sit down with some Paper Mario(ttyd) in just a minuet. But before that, I should direct you to this great documentary on shmups over at Insert credit. It’s not actually produced by insert credit(duh) but they have all the links and a nice synopsis. (Download both the avi and subtitles) You can learn a lot about some great shumps and their developers.

Opoona - Video

Friday, March 16th, 2007

The announcement of Opoona from Koei sparked some interest the other day. So I was happy to find a short video of the Presentation from Impress watch(tv). Check it out, the gameplay footage is….interesting. They don’t show the gameplay with the controller mechanics so I’m not really sure what to make of it there. But the graphics/-animation seem decent enough.

EDIT/UPDATE: Now there’s a trailer! Go figure. But hey, I suggest looking at both to develop a better opinion on the game. ;)

Oh hey, so THAT’S my password.

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Yep, I just had one of those moments where I realize I couldn’t login because I forgot I had changed my password to the most obvious thing in the world. This whole time I was writing it off as. “Oh Dennis probably hasn’t fixed that or something”, but when I saw the blogs on the front page I knew I was doing something wrong… so I tried my other password and low and behold! Now I can start blogging again! Open the flood gates!
*flow of random crap*
… Let me start by saying that out of all the takes on the DS-X2 podcast with me in it, the one that was actually published was probably my worst. The others were taken during last summer - which is when I kick ultra-videogame-news-nerd into full gear. For the love of gunstar that’s how I got into blogging in the first place!
